Maria Drakaki
Maria Drakaki is Professor in Humanitarian Engineering in the Department of Science and Technology, at the University Center of International Programmes of Studies of the International Hellenic University. She is the Dean of the School of Science and Technology. She received her Ph. D degree from the University of Texas at Austin, Physics Department (1992), an M. Sc. degree from the University of Westminster in VLSI System Design (2004) and a B. Sc. degree from the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1986). She was Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at the International Hellenic University (2019), Associate Professor in the Department of Automation Engineering of the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (2018 – 2019), Assistant Professor in the Department of Automation Engineering at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (2014 – 2018). Prof. Drakaki was adjunct Assistant Professor in the Departments of Automation Engineering (2005 – 2013) and Electronics Engineering at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (1994 – 2011). She was a postdoctoral researcher (1993, 1997) and research collaborator at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2000-2013).
Prof. Drakaki holds the Fulbright scholarship. She has published several papers in various international peer-reviewed journals and conferences as well as book chapters in international engineering books. She was the recipient of the best paper award of the International Conference on Information Systems Architecture and Technology (2017). She is the General Chair of the International Conference on Humanitarian Crisis Management (KRISIS 2023). She has co-organised several special sessions at international conferences. She participates in national and European projects including the European Qualifications-Refugees and Recognition (EQUAL). She has participated in several national and European research projects. Her research interests include humanitarian engineering, AI methods for disaster management, humanitarian logistics, intelligent manufacturing systems, decision support systems, and supply chain management. She serves in editorial boards, including as Associate Editor in the specialty section Data Analytics for Social Impact for the Frontiers in Big Data.
Prof. Drakaki is the Director of the Institute for the Management of Refugee Flows and Crises of the International Hellenic University. She is the Director of the Master’s degree programme in Environmental Management and Sustainability and Director of the Master’s degree programme in Energy and Finance in the Department of Science and Technology at the University Center for International Programmes of Studies of the International Hellenic University. She is a member of the board of the IHU Center for Lifelong Learning. She was a member of the Quality Assurance Committee of the Department of Science and Technology (2020-2023). Prof. Drakaki was Deputy Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at the International Hellenic University and an academic member of the University’s Research Committee (2019). She was Deputy Head of the Department of Automation Engineering at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (2017 – 2019). Prof. Drakaki was an academic member of the Research Committee (2017 – 2019) and Erasmus+ Academic Coordinator (2016 – 2018) of the Department of Automation Engineering at the Alexander Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki. She was Erasmus+ Academic Coordinator of the Department of Science and Technology (2020-April 2021).
Prof. Drakaki is the Director of the new interinstitutional M. Sc. in Humanitarian Logistics and Crisis Management between the Department of Balkan, Slavic and Oriental Studies of the University of Macedonia and the Department of Science and Technology of the International Hellenic University.
