General Information
The School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Economics of the University Center of International Programmes of Studies of International Hellenic University (I.H.U.) in collaboration with the European Law and Governance School (ELGS) of the European Public Law Organization (E.P.L.O.) are exceptionally pleased to announce the organization of the EnerTech Summer Academy 2024: “Mastering Advanced Technologies in Energy”.
International Hellenic University is a centre of academic excellence, and this tradition underpins our summer classes, while ELGS is a modern International University School offering excellence in tertiary levels of education in the fields of european law and governance, aiming to shape socially responsible leaders of the future.
Our Summer Academy gives participants from around the world the opportunity to explore, in a small-class setting, subjects of high interest: Energy & Technology!

Programme Structure / Working hours
The lectures will be live and will take place, in Athens, during the first week of July 2024 (between the 1st and the 6th of July 2024). More specifically, for the period of 1 week, 6 lectures will be offered from Monday 1 July to Saturday 6 July (10.00a.m.-12.00 p.m. & 12.10-14.00 p.m.). Along with the lectures, the program includes some further activities; the participants will be given the opportunity to participate to educational visits.
Prof. Michael Caramanis
Micael Caramanis is Professor of Systems and Mech. Eng. at Boston University. He has chaired the Greek Regulatory Authority for Energy and the International Energy Charter’s Investment Group. He was personally involved, among others in power market implementations in England and Italy. His scientific portfolio includes numerous written works and publications on important issues in the energy field.
Dr. Stelios Bikos
Stelios Bikos is the Director of the Energy Competence Center, the Cluster of the National Technical University for the Energy Transition of businesses. He holds a PhD in chemical engineering and has taken over the coordination of the Greek Technology Platform for Sustainable Chemistry (SusChem Greece). He also was a high-end executive in the Public Gas Company (DEPA).
Prof. Nikolaos Hatziargyriou
Nikolaos Hatziargyriou is a Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of National Technological University (NTUA). He served as he has served as President and CEO of DEDDIE, the Operator of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network, as well as Deputy CEO of the Public Power Corporation (PPC). He also participated in more than 60 Research Programs and has a rich scientific work, having published more than 200 scientific articles and papers.
Prof. Aris Dimeas
Aris Dimeas is an Assistant Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of National Technological University (NTUA). He specializes in the development of applications in the fields related to Power Systems operations, Renewable Energy Sources, Artificial Intelligence on Power Systems, Smart Grids and Control Software development. He is member of the Technical Chamber of Greece and of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Prof. Theodore Panagos
Theodoros Panagos is a lawyer, former Associate Professor at the School of Humanities of the International Hellenic University. He is a former Vice Chairman of the Regulatory Authority for Energy of the Hellenic Republic. His academic and teaching subject is Energy Law, Environmental Law, Cross-Border Energy Trade. His scientific and professional occupation is in electricity, natural gas, and renewable energy markets. He has written many books, with a subject related to the above subjects.
Prof. Dimitra Vagiona
Dimitra Vagiona is an Associate Professor of the Department of Spatial Planning and Development Engineering of the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, specializing in Sustainable Development and Project and Environmental Management. Her research work focuses on the application of the principles of sustainable development at the various scales of planning, project management, the assessment and evaluation of the effects of activities – projects and programs, the utilization of tools and methods for the management of the environment and renewable natural resources. She has published scientific books and numerous articles and publications.
Prof. Nick Petropoulos
Nick Petropoulos is an Assistant Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). His scientific specialization concerns the thermophysical properties of nuclear reactor coolants. He has numerous research projects, while, he has, in many cases, worked as a consultant for the Greek State.
Panos Panousos
Panos is the Energy Transition Senior Manager of DESFA, the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator, responsible for the strategy towards renewable and low carbon gases, in line with the EU decarbonisation targets. Panos has studied Chemical Engineering (MSc) and has a MSc in Total Quality Management. He is currently leading the company’s projects for the introduction of renewable gases in the transportation system and the development of the hydrogen backbone in Greece. He has worked as a member of the national committee for the development of the hydrogen strategy. He is one of the co-chairs of the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance, Transmission & Distribution Roundtable, and represents DESFA in the European Hydrogen Backbone and the Gas for Climate initiatives. He has 29 years’ experience in the gas sector, actively involved in all first steps of gas introduction to Greece, and the daily operation of the transmission system.
Marianthi Karavassili
Marianthi is a member of DESFA Team developing alternative fuels and renewable gases, with expertise in Permitting Policy and Environmental Strategy, including stakeholder engagement. She has specialised in Oil & Gas and have a wide range of knowledge on Permitting engineering, Land Acquisition legislation and procedures, Environmental and Stakekolder Engagement issues. She has led / managed / participated in various projects for Natural Gas Pipelines, Compressor Stations, FSRU, LNG Terminals, Oil Refineries, Oil Pipelines, CHP, Thermal Power Plants and generally big energy projects, including the National Natural Gas Transmission System of Greece (pipeline and LNG terminal). She provided expertise in various HSE fields, such as licensing, land acquisition, concession of coast and shore zones, policy and legislation issues, environmental impact assessment, environmental compliance, Stakeholder Engagement, Permitting Risk Management and has also worked in projects complying with EBRD and IFC Standards, Technical Due Diligence. Her experience in the Oil & Gas Sector is focused on Permits and Licencing, elaboration of environmental impact studies, route refinement, environmental management and monitoring plans, land acquisition consultancy (expropriations, easement, straight purchase etc), Stakeholder Engagement consultancy for large projects, suck as the Natural Gas Transmission System of Greece (of total length of more than 1500 Kms), Combined Cycle Power Plant of 390 MW in Thessaloniki, LNG installations in Revithoussa island, other Thermal Power Plants etc.

The aim of this 1-week intensive Academy is to make the participants more acquainted with the engaging subject of Energy & Technology by providing up-to-date knowledge presented and discussed by experts of the relevant fields.

Certificate of Attendance/ Material
- A Certificate of Attendance will be awarded at the end of the program to all attendees who have fulfilled all requirements.
Participants will be provided with electronic material, presentations of the lectures, court decisions, material for workshops and case studies.
Accommodation and Tuition Fees
The tuition fees are 250 € (non-refundable). The fees will cover:
- Participation in the Summer Academy
- Welcome Social Event on the Induction Day
- Transportation for a cultural/educational visit
- Goodbye Social Event (Dinner)
All participants are responsible for covering travel costs from their home cities to Athens and other everyday expenses. Participants will have to cover their travel and accommodation expenses. Participants can choose accommodation from a variety of options.

In any case, the Directors of the Academy remain the right to decide upon the admission or the rejection of the applications, taking into account, inter alia, the applicants’ level of English language knowledge.
